After a week in the MST’s asentamento in Chapada Diamantina, Bahia, Brasil, I had the opportunity to play some music with the man in the picture. The next night, knowing that we were filming a documentary, he came to the house where we were staying and sang his best protest songs. After half an hour shooting a beautiful video, I swiched the camera back to photo mode. He was completely used to the presence of the camera, and let me take some portraits really close from him, only giving me a huge smile between each song and asking me which one I wanted to hear again. I believe that a nice portrait show a social relation between the subject and the photographer. I’m a 1m85 tall white beardy man with a full frame camera in my hands. There is no point in trying to hide or to pretend I’m not there.
